NOVOSTI IZ YALS-A

U periodu od septembra 2007. do juna 2008, YALS je nastavio da najveću pažnju posvećuje svom primarnom cilju – poboljšanju kvaliteta učenja stranih jezika. To se najneposrednije ispoljilo u primeni nove revidirane šeme inspekcije, sa kojom se krenulo u decembru 2007, na YALS-ovim seminarima I radionicama, kao i na stalnoj saradnji sa EAQUALS-om.

Reinspekcija škola članica u skladu sa revidiranom šemom inspekcije obezbedila je dodatni podsticaj za preispitivanje i osavremenjivanje postupaka ne samo na nivou YALS-a nego i u svakoj pojedinačnoj školi. Tokom priprema za zakazane posete inspektora, novi talasi informacija i razmene iskustava su se širili od jedne do druge članice, sa rezultatom bolje efikasnosti na oba nivoa. Pored toga, YALS-ovi inspektori su generalno zaključili da su novi metodi inspekcije i ocenjivanja koherentniji i jednostavniji za primenu. Ovogodišnja reinspekcija je pokazala veliki broj konkretnih poboljšanja u školama, kao što su poboljšanja u izradi plana I programa, što je rezultat YALS-ovog regionalnog seminara održanog zajedno sa EAQUALS-om u Beogradu 2. I 3. marta 2007, posebni resursi za planiranje i primetno visoki kvalitet internih radionica, organizovanih na principu kolegijalne obuke nastavnika usmerene prevenstveno na razmenu iskustava i poboljšanje veština prezentacije. 

Aktivna saradnja sa EAQUALS-om je nastavljena preko YALS-ovih predstavnika Mirjane Ljiljak-Vukajlović, kao Predsednika upravnog odbora YALS-a, Vesne Stakić, koja je predstavljala YALS na godišnjoj skupštini EAQUALS-a u Parizu od 23. do 25. aprila, pored sopstvene škole Tom i Ema, i Zorice Kovačević kao Nacionalnog direktora za Srbiju. Dve članice YALS-a su učestvovale na EAQUALs-ovim radionicama u okviru projekata od posebnog interesa, održanim u Budimpešti od 15. do 17. novembra 2007: Eva Bako iz škole Blue Moon, Kula, za “Vodič za upravljanje kvalitetom” i Zorica Kovačević iz International House, Beograd za “Primenu Evropskog jezičkog portfolija”. Gđa Kovačević se takođe priključila projektu “Obuka nastavnika”.

Treći interni seminar YALS-a “Kreativne ideje u nastavi engleskog jezika” organizovan je od strane škole Tom i Ema, 27. oktobra 2007. Pet predavača je predstavilo obilje korisnih aktivnosti grupi od 24 učesnika, od kojih su ih mnogi odmah primenili u nastavi čim su se vratili u svoje škole.

Druga dva događaja koji su odraz privrženosti ideji primene jedinstvenih Evropskih standarda i koji su privukli primetnu pažnju javnosti I bili su sledeći seminari: “Najnovija dostignuća i praktična primena CEFR-a u izradi nastavnog plana i programa u školama stranih jezika”, u Nišu, 24. novembra 2007, i “CEFR i portfolio” u Kuli, 12. aprila 2008, sa predavačima iz YALS-a, sa Niškog univerziteta i Longmanovog predstavništva u Beogradu.

News from YALS

In the period from September 2007 to June 2008 YALS continued to place main emphasis on its primary goal – promotion of quality language learning. This was most directly reflected in the implementation of the new revised inspection scheme, which started in December 2007, in YALS seminars and workshops, and in continuing cooperation with EAQUALS.

The reinspection of member schools in accordance with the revised inspection scheme gave a fresh impetus to reviewing and streamlining procedures not only at the level of YALS, but in each individual school as well. While preparing for the appointed inspectors’ visits, new waves of information and experience exchange spread from one member to another, leading to better efficacy on both levels. Also, YALS ispectors generally concluded that the new inspection and assessment methods are more coherent and more readily implemented. This year’s reinspection showed a great number of specific improvements in schools, such as those in curriculum and syllabus design, resulting from YALS regional seminar held together with EAQUALS in Belgrade from 2 to 3 March 2007, special lesson planning resources, and a remarkably high quality of inhouse workshops organised on the principle of peer teacher training, with the primary goal of sharing experience and improving presentation skills.

Active cooperation with EAQUALS was maintained through YALS representatives Mirjana Ljiljak-Vukajlovic, as YALS Chair, Vesna Stakic, who represented YALS at EAQUALS AGM in Paris from 23 to 25 April 2008, in addition to representing her own school Tom and Emma, and Zorica Kovacevic as Country Manager for Serbia. Two YALS members participated in EAQUALS Special Interest Project Workshop Meeting held in Budapest from 15 to 17 November, Eva Bako from Blue Moon for Quality Management Guide, and Zorica Kovačević from International House Belgrade for ELP Implementation. Ms Kovačevic also joined the project on teacher training.

3rd In-house YALS seminar “ Creative ideas in ELT” was organised by Tom and Emma school of English on 27th October, 2007.  Five presenters introduced plenty of useful activities to 24 participants, many of whom immediately used them in their lessons once they got back to their schools.

Other two events that reflect commitment to the idea of applying unique European standards and which aroused noticable public interest were the following seminars: “The latest achievements and the practical application of CEFR in creating the curriculum and the syllabus in foreign language schools”, in Niš on 24 November 2007, and “CEFR and Portfolio” in Kula on 12 April 2008, with presenters from YALS, the University of Nis and Longman Teacher Training Office in Belgrade.

YALS-ovo literarno takmičenje za 2007/2008

Tradicionalno YALS-ovo literarno takmičenje održano je i ove školske godine. Kako bi se većem broju škola omogućilo da učestvuje na takmičenju, konkurs je raspisan u martu a pobednici su proglašeni posle Uskršnjeg raspusta.

Najveći broj učesnika bio je na A1 i A2 nivou, pa je komisija odlučila da, osim prve, dodeli i drugu nagradu.

Teme po nivoima su:

  • A1- Meet my family   (60 do 80 reči)
  • A2- Design your own crazy house      (do 120 reči)
  • B1- Write a short story of about 150 words. Start your story with these words:
    She was standing by the check-in desk. She heard her flight number. Suddenly, the man in front of her turned and looked at her. “It's you!” she said. “But how...?” ...
  • B2 – You have decided to enter a short story competition organized by an international magazine. The story should begin with these words:
    It was the last day of the summer holidays and I wasn't expecting much to happen (do 180 reči)
  • C1 – An international student magazine regularly features a page called “Contrasts”. Write a review for this page contrasting two films of the same genre which you have seen; one of which you enjoyed and one of which you found disappointing (do 250 reči)
  • C2 – Your course tutor has asked you to write an essay giving your personal views on these points and providing specific examples to support your views: Dress in the workplace: Historical perspective (global); A company / professional code (personal view); Uniforms (local/ home country)

YALS LITERARY COMPETITION 2007/2008

Traditional YALS literary competition was organized this school year, too. In order to enable more schools to participate, the competition started in March and the winners were proclaimed after the Easter break.

The biggest number of participants was at A1 and A2 levels, so the board decided to award the second prize too.

Topics according to the levels were:

  • A1- Meet my family   (60 to 80 words)

Godišnja konferencija EAQUALS-a
Pariz, 23.-25. april 2008. godine.

Konferenciji je prisustvovala Vesna Stakić, kao predstavnik Škole ’Tom & Emma’ i YALS-a.

Tema Konferencije je bila ’Kako obogatiti iskustvo učenja jezika i učiniti ga efikasnijim’. Konferencija je započela radionicama kojima je cilj bio da se utvrdi napredak u radu na osam projekata koji su započeti u Budimpešti u novembru 2007. godine i da se napravi plan daljeg rada.

U formalnom delu konferencije razmatrano je i glasano o nekim pitanjima koja su ključna za dalji razvoj EAQUALS-a. Odlučeno je da će, umesto četiri EAQUALS logoa, koliko ih je da sada bilo u upotrebi, biti korišćen samo jedan koji bi koristili kako sam EAQUALS tako i punopravni i pridruženi članovi. Ovaj logo će sadržati reči: ’ Evropska jezička akreditacija ’. Takođe je odlučeno da se počne rad na projektu koji će omogućiti prvo školama punopravnim članicama a zatim, uz nadoknadu, i organizacijama koji su pridruženi članovi ili uopšte nisu članovi EAQUALS-a  da izdaju sertifikate polaznicima o ostvarenom nivou znanja jezika i CEFR nivou. Posebna komisija EAQUALS-a bi utvrđivala da li škola ispunjava uslove za izdavanje ovih diploma.

Druga pitanja o kojima se diskutovalo i glasalo su: akreditacija tečajeva za obuku nastvanika, amandmani na EAQUALS-ove povelje, dalje povećanje članarine i troškova inspekcije. Tri organizacije su primljene u EAQUALS kao pridruženi članovi: Institut Servantes, Češka asocijacija škola stranih jezika i Pearson jezički ispiti. EAQUALS je početkom 2008. godine imao 103 punopravna i 17 pridruženih članova.

U toku konferencije održano je nekoliko sastanaka sa predstavnicima nacionalnih organizacija. Na jednom su se predstavnici EAQUALS-a sreli individualno sa svakim od  nacionalnih predstavnka da bi razgovarali o mogućnosti potpisivanja sporazuma o saradnji.

Sledeći EAQUALS sastanak će biti u formi radionica, radi nastavka rada na započetim projektima, a održaće se u Lisabonu između 13. i 15. novembra 2008. godine.

 

EAQUALS Annual General Meeting and International Conference

The conference was attended by Vesna Stakić, as Tom and Emma and YALS representative.

The theme of the meeting was ‘Adding Value in Language Education’. It started with special interest project workshops aimed at reviewing progress on the eight projects started in Budapest in November 2007 and developing further plans.

In the AGM several key issues were discussed and voted on. It was decided that instead of four logos, EAQUALS would in future use only one which would be used by both accredited (full) and associate members and would have a strap line with the words ‘European Language Accreditation.’ A decision was also made to start developing a scheme which would enable accredited members first and later, for a fee, associate members and outsiders, to issue EAQUALS certificates of language proficiency, stating the global CEFR level achieved by their students. An EAQUALS assessment panel would decide whether a school has a system in place sufficient to assure the veracity of the certificate.

Other issues discussed and voted on were: accreditation of teacher training courses, amendments to EAQUALS charters, a further increase in membership and inspection fees. Three organisations were accepted into EAQUALS as associate members: the Servantes Institute, the Czech Association of language schools and Pearson language tests. At the beginning of 2008 EAQUALS had 103 accredited (full) members and 17 associate members.

Several meetings with representatives of national organisations took place. During one the representatives met individually with EAQUALS executives mainly to discuss the possibility of signing a cooperation agreement between EAQUALS and each national organisation.

The next EAQUALS meeting will be a workshop to continue work on special interest projects and will be held in Lisbon 13th- 15th November 2008.

YALS SEMINAR o Zajedničkom evropskom referentnom okviru za jezike i Portfoliju

12.-tog aprila 2008. YALS i BLUE MOON Škola engleskog jezika organizovali su Seminar na gore pomenute teme.

Oko 30 učesnika iz osam gradova je iskoristilo priliku da uživa u tri različita a ipak povezana predavanja koja su održale Slobodanka Kitić, profesor Univerziteta u Nišu i Dragana Filipović, Longmanov instruktor.

Naslov prvog predavanja je bio u obliku zagonetke i pružilo je bolji uvid u pojam i koncept Zajedničkog jezičkog okvira na interesantan i privlačan način.

To predavanje ne samo da je bilo izazovno nego je poslužilo i kao dobar uvod u drugo predavanje o jezičkom instrumentu zvanom Evropski jezički portfolio koje je održala Dragana Filipović. Pošto su većina učesnika bili mladi i neiskusni predavači, ova prezentacija im je ponudila temeljan i iscrpan pristup temi Portfolija i njegovim drugim formama, u vidu npr. Jezičkog portfolia za Longmanov udžbenik Total English.

Treća radionica je pružila praktično iskustvo u planiranju časa i imala je izuzetan ishod u vidu osam planova časa napisanih za 15 minuta od strane timova učesnika a koji su bili izloženi u holu, gde su upoređivani i analizirani od strane Slobodanke Kitić.

To je zaista učvrstilo samopouzdanje nastavnika i još jednom ih uverilo da se uspešni planovi časa mogu napisati za manje od 15 minuta ako su ciljevi jasni.

Seminar je trajao ceo dan i svi su uživali i učestvovali u radionicama. Otišli su sa puno novih kreativnih ideja i sa poklonima našeg sponzora Longmana.

YALS i Škola BLUE MOON se zahvaljuju svim učesnicima za učešće na seminaru. Takođe bi želeli da pozovu sve zainteresovane na buduća okupljanja sa idejom da se učenje i podučavanje jezika promovišu na najbolji mogući način.

 

YALS SEMINAR on CEFR and PORTFOLIO in Kula

On the 12th of April, 2008, YALS and BLUE MOON School of English organized a teacher training seminar on the above topics.

About 30 participants from eight different towns took the opportunity to enjoy three various yet somehow interrelated sessions held by Ms Slobodanka Kitic, lecturer at University of Nis, Department of English and Dragana Filipovic, Longman Teacher Trainer.

The first session’s title, held by Ms Kitic, was in the form of a riddle  I C  CEFR as AS… and it gave a better insight into the notion and concept of Common European Framework of Reference in an interesting and appealing way.

It was not only challenging but served as a good introduction to the second session on a CEFR tool called the European Language Portfolio held by Ms Filipovic. Since most participants were very young and inexperienced teachers, this presentation offered them a thorough and exhaustive approach to the topic of Portfolio and its varieties in the form of Longman’s Total English Language Portfolio for example.

The third session gave hands-on experience on Lesson Planning and had a wonderful outcome of eight lesson plans, produced in 15 minutes by teams of participants and exhibited in the hall where they were compared and analyzed under the watchful eye of Ms Kitic.

It definitely boosted the self-confidence of teachers and once again reassured them that efficient lesson plans can be produced in less than 15 minutes if the aims and objectives are clear.

The Seminar lasted the whole day and everybody enjoyed and worked through the workshops. They went home full of new creative ideas and some presents from our sponsor Longman.

YALS and BLUE MOON School wish to thank all participants for attending the Seminar and thus making it unique. They would also like to invite all interested to future gatherings with the idea of promoting language learning and teaching in the best possible way.

SEMINAR YALS –a u Nišu

Seminar je održan u Nišu 24.11.2007. u Sali Mašinskog fakulteta u periodu od 11:00 – 16:30.
Tema seminara bila je “Najnovija dostignuća i praktična primena Zajedničkog jezičkog okvira u izradi nastavnih planova i programa u školama stranih jezika.”
Seminaru je prisustvovao 31 profesor engleskog jezika iz Beograda, Niša, Leskovca, Lebana.
Seminar je akreditovan od strane Ministarstva prosvete republike Srbije i svi učesnici seminara dobili su sertifikat sa četiri sata stručnog usavršavanja.
Seminar je uz toplu dobrodošlicu otvorila i sve prisutne je pozdravila predsednica YALS-a, Mirjana Ljiljak-Vukajlović.
Predavači su bili Mia Rakočević, Milada Ševa, Slobodanka Kitić i Marija Pejatović.

“Da li CEFR treba usvojiti ili prilagoditi?” – Mia Rakočević
Mia Rakočević se sveobuhvatno pozabavila problemima sa kojima se suočavaju profesori kada svoje programe prilagođavaju Zajedničkom evropskom okviru – kakve promene treba da uvedu u svoje planove i programe, i da li je potrebno prilagoditi planove i programe CEFR nivoima i koje principe CEFRa treba usvojiti i prema kojima treba sastaviti programe skola.

“Načini podučavanja engleskog” – Milada Ševa
Milada Ševa je uspela da u svojoj dinamičnoj radionici ukaže na neuspešne načine podučavanja veštine čitanja, i da sa prisutnim profesorima podeli interesantne ideje za podučavanje ove veštine, kao i za razvijanje interesovanja za čitanje kod polaznika.

“CEFR & ELT” – Slobodanka Kitić
Na veoma intresenatan i nesvakidašnji način, kroz objašnjenje osnovnih pojmova Slobodanka Kitić je uspela da prisutnim profesorima objasni i približi Zajednički evropski okvir, kao i značaj njegove primene u nastavi engleskog jezika.

“Prakticna primena CEFR” – Marija Pejatović
Marija Pejatović je imala veoma interesantnu i nadasve praktičnu radionicu, u kojoj je uz mnoštvo materijala i objašnjenja, pokušala da na jednostavan način prisutnim profesorima objasni kako da adaptiraju postojeće nastavne planove i programe u skladu sa CEFR nivoima.

 

YALS SEMINAR in NIŠ

The seminar was held in Nis from 11am to 4.30pm, on 24th November 2007 in the hall of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
The topic of the seminar was “The latest achievements and the practical application of the Common European Framework of Reference in creating the curriculum and the syllabus in foreign language schools”.
31 English language teachers from Belgrade, Nis, Leskovac, Lebane and Valjevo attended the seminar.
The seminar was accredited by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Serbia and all the participants were awarded the certificates with four hours of professional development.
The lecturers were Mia Rakocevic, Milada Seva, Slobodanka Kitic and Marija Pejatovic.The chairman of YALS, Mrs Mirjana Ljiljak-Vukajlovic opened the seminar and warmly welcomed  all the participans.

“To adopt or adapt” – Mia Rakocevic
Mrs Rakocevic talked about the problems that teachers have to face when they adapt their syllabuses to the Common European Framework of Reference – what changes they have to make in the syllabuses, whether it is necessary to adapt the syllabuses to the CEFR levels and what principles have to be adopted in order to create the school curriculum.

“Ways of teaching English” – Milada Seva
In a really dynamic workshop, Mrs Seva managed to point out the downfalls in teaching reading while at the same time she shared with the participants some interesting reading classroom ideas and some ways of developing the interest in reading with the language students.

“CEFR & ELT” – Slobodanka Kitic
In a very interesting and unusual way, by making the participants ask for and give explanations, Mrs Kitic managed to explain and bring closer the CEFR as well as to underline the importance of CEFR application in the ELT.

“Practical CEFR application” – Marija Pejatovic
Mrs Pejatovic had a very interesting and highly practical workshop where she tried, with the aid of plenty of materials and explanations, to simply explain how to adapt the existing syllabuses to the CEFR levels.

Gđa. Eva Bako and gđa. Zorica Kovacević su predstavljale YALS Udruženje na EAQUALS-ovim radionicama u Budimpešti od 15. do 17. novembra 2007. godine. Projekti od posebnog interesa (SIP) su bili krilatica za ovaj EAQUALS-ov događaj. Svi učesnici su imali priliku da prvog dana učestvuju na dve SIP radionice, gde su SIP koordinatori predstavili projekte i rokove.
Teme SIP-ova su bile raznovrsne; od međunarodne šeme akreditacije obuke nastavnika, prevodilačkih alata za EAQUALS-ove dokumente, primene Evropskog jezičkog portfolija, obuke akademskih direktora, revizije “Mogu da…” ishoda do istraživanja kvaliteta.
YALS-ovi predstavnici su uzeli učešće na dva SIP-a: Primena Evropskog jezičkog portfolija (ELP) i Akreditacija kurseva za obuku nastavnika.
YALS je uzeo aktivno učešće na prvom SIP-u I njegov predstavnik, gđa. Zorica Kovačević će imati zadatak da pošalje upitnike o primeni ELP-a i lokalnim nastavnicima i direktorima škola u cilju prikupljanja pouzdanih podataka.

 

EAQUALS Workshop Meeting
Budapest 15-17 November 2007.

Ms. Eva Bako and Ms. Zorica Kovacevic represented YALS Association at the EAQUALS WORKSHOP MEETING ,BUDAPEST 15-17 November 2007. Special Interest Projects, or SIPs were the buzz words for this EAQUALS event. All participants had the chance of participating in two SIP workshops on the first day, when the SIP coordinators presented the projects and the deadlines.
The topics of the SIPs varied from the international teacher training accreditation scheme, translation tools for EAQUALS documents, ELP implementation, training of academic managers, review of can-do statements to qualitative research.
YALS representatives joined two SIPs: ELP Implementation and the Accreditation of Teacher Training Courses.
YALS actively joined the first SIP, and its representative, Ms.Zorica Kovacevic will have the task of sending questionnaires on ELP implementation both to local teachers and school managers, so that reliable data could be gathered.

Treći interni seminar YALS-a: 
Kreativne ideje u nastavi engleskog jezika.

Kreativne ideje u nastavi engleskog jezika je održan u školi Tom i Ema 27-og oktobra 2007.  Seminar koji je trajao jedan dan je bio podeljen u pet sesija; svaka sesija je trajala od 45 minuta do sat vremena.  Sve škole YALS udruženja su bile pozvane da pošalju do dva profesora.

Tema svih predavanja je bila ‘Kako da budemo što kreativniji u nastavi’ i učesnici su bili podstaknuti da aktivno učestvuju u svim diskusijma i aktivnostima.

Pet profesora škole Tom i Ema su održali sledeće prezentacije:  Nenad Knežević je održao sesiju o ‘blogovima’ i kako da se započnu blogovi sa studentima.  Sofija Ljiljak-Vukajlović je imala sesiju na temu kako koristiti video u učionici.  Predmet predavanja Tine Samardžić je bio na temu ‘spelling’ na interaktivan način.  Nataša Radovanović je održala sesiju na temu koriščenje priča u nastavi.  Dragana Kragulj je govorila o nalaženju i pravljenju materijala koji se koriste u nastavi.

Komentari o seminaru su bili u verbalnoj formi i vrlo pozitivni.

 

3rd In-house YALS Seminar:  Creative Ideas in ELT

Creative Ideas in ELT was held at Tom and Emma’s school of English on 27th October, 2007.  It was a one-day seminar divided into five sessions; each session lasting between 45min to 1 hour in duration.  All YALS schools were invited to send up to two teachers to attend this seminar. 

The topics presented were based on the theme of “let’s be as creative as we can” and participant were encouraged to actively contribute to all discussions and activities presented.

The seminar included 5 presenters: Nenad Knezevic held a session on blogging and how to set up blogs with students. Sofija Ljiljak-Vukajlovic presentation was on using video in the classroom as a teaching tool. Tina Samardzic presented an hour on teaching spelling in an interactive manner. Natasa Radovanovic’s session was on creative story-telling as a means of getting our students interested in stories and reading.  Dragana Kragulj presented a session on making and finding resources to use in the classroom. 

Feedback was given in verbal form by participants and was extremely positive.
