YALS Chair Marija Pejatović opening the Seminar on Continuing Professional Development and Assessment, Belgrade, 13.05.2011
YALS REPORT 2010/ 2011 by Marija Pejatović, Chair of YALS This school year was one of the most successful for our association. We were recognized as a key partner in quality language services in Serbia and participated in numerous events organized by EAQUALS, British Council and ELT publishers in Serbia and abroad. Our representatives – Ms Vesna Stakic and Ms Danijela Veljkovic, went to EAQUALS workshops in London, 2010 and EAQUALS AGM in Prague in 2011. Together with the British Council, YALS organized a one-day seminar in Belgrade in May, 2011 with the newly elected EAQUALS president, Ms Ludka Kotarska, as a speaker. We were happy to be Ms Kotarska’s hosts during her first stay in Belgrade. The seminar entitled Good practice in continuing professional development and assessment aroused great interests not only among English teachers from private language schools but also English teachers working in state schools throughout Serbia. As the seminar turned out to be a real success both YALS and the British Council agreed to continue to jointly organize seminars in the future. As YALS is the only Association of language schools in Serbia which is fully organized and possesses all the relevant documents we were invited by the British Council to represent our country at the Regional Associations Meeting in Zagreb in February 2011. The Meeting was organized by the British Council and supported by EAQUALS. At the meeting YALS became a member of the Quality Language services Network together with national associations from Macedonia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and Bosnia. The Network will have its own mailing list and will work together on fulfilling the same goals. The Memorandum of Understanding between the British Council and YALS was renewed for one more year. Again this year we organized YALS Literary Competition 2011 and about 30 students were awarded readers provided by our generous sponsor Pearson Longman. This is an ongoing cooperation which will continue. YALS representative, Ms Maja Gavrilovic, presented our Association at the English Book seminar on School management in Belgrade in February, 2011. This was a follow-up of a meeting organized by the English Book representative, Mr Aleksandar Ilic, and YALS president , Ms Marija Pejatovic. At the meeting it was agreed that both the English Book and YALS would support each other in activities relating to enhancing the quality in language schools in Serbia. We continue our cooperation with the English Language Teachers’ Association – ELTA. For the next year we have already booked Guarnerius for YALS two –day Conference which will be held in October, 2011. EAQUALS and British Council have already confirmed their active involvement and we expect the publishers to give their contributions too. The next YALS In-house seminar will be held in Leskovac in March 2012. As a result of our campaign on promoting the quality in language schools in Serbia, at YALS AGM in June, 2011, English Club, a language school from Cuprija, became YALS associate member. We sincerely hope that more schools will find their interest in joining YALS and we invite them to “Join YALS to find the well”. |

Presenting YALS at The English Book event on school management, 25. 2. 2011. Belgrade First, I wish to thank The English Book for giving me the opportunity, at the event they have organized, to speak to you on behalf of YALS and about YALS. I haven’t had a chance to meet all of you today but for those who don’t know me, I am Maja Gavrilović, the school owner of Livingston Language Centre. My school is one of the founder schools of YALS, and has been a member since 1999. YALS, as some of you may know, is an association of private language schools of Serbia. Since its beginnings it has had a varying number of member schools fluctuating around the number of 13. Our desire is to change this number into another one, steadier and a lot higher. Why YALS? The answer might be that, we, the school owners probably share the same aims. Our aim, in YALS, is twofold: to pursue and promote quality in language teaching as well as to perfect the ways of provision of this service. In order to achieve this aim we have succeeded in joining the EAQUALS, as an associate member, in 2001 which enabled us to follow and develop along the well thought out and carefully set path. I don’t wish to keep you any longer then just necessary with my speech so I will lay out before you just a couple of ideas about why you may wish to consider joining YALS. I will briefly relate to you my personal experience which, I believe, is more or less similar to the experience of my colleagues in YALS. At times, during 2001 and 2 and 3, as my school was undergoing the change through the process of complying with the set of standards, simply and clearly laid out, and when the light in the tunnel was quite dim and far, far away, I did wonder (together with my staff), whatever are we doing this for?! But once the job was done (one developmental stage was behind us / although still many more ahead, / of course we weren’t aware of that!) I can only be proud of what both my staff and I have achieved. The result is: our school, and everything about it has its reason, direction, a goal and certainly a reward in all its possible meanings but mainly in that that we do accomplish what we set out to accomplish. This was made possible to happen thanks to joining a group of schools and meeting their owners whose enthusiasm, motivation, initiative and endurance were and are endless. They are YALS. When in such company, you can’t but go with the flow and think and do alike. Another thing is, we, in YALS, are very well aware of the fact that there are quite a few good schools outside YALS. We would be very happy if these schools would consider the possibility of joining YALS where they, together with their fresh school image, different and new ideas, would be more than welcome. Together we could achieve more. Being in YALS makes it possible to keep us up-to-date with the events going on in the region. At the moment, three of our members are attending the regional conference in Zagreb, which is organized jointly by the EAQUALS and the British Council. The idea behind the meeting is to form a regional association to promote the shared goal regarding the quality of language teaching and the provision of the services. In view of this action it is only natural to strive to form a wider national association of schools in Serbia, therefore, I once again repeat, re-think the possibility of becoming a YALS member, in order to turn it into a wider, national and more capable association. For all the factual data about YALS please visit our site www.yals.rs and feel free to contact us at any time. Thank you so much for your time, and once again, thank you, The English Book and The British Council. Maja Gavrilović |

Yals-ov seminar u organizaciji New English School, Pančevo Izvestilac: Katarina Ristić U subotu, 11. decembra 2010. godine u Pančevu je održan interni seminar Yals-a u organizaciji New English School. |
YALS Teacher Training Seminar: ELT Games by Katarina Ristić On Saturday, December 11th 2010, an in-house Yals teacher training seminar was held in Pančevo , organised by New Engish School. Over 20 teachers gathered to aquire as much practical training as possible. There were two workshops (60 minutes each) by Katarina Ristić, a teacher from New English School. The purpose of these workshops was to present different aspects of using games in ESL classroom in the process of language learning. It was also a selection of ELT games that can easily become an integrated part of any topic, language skill or grammar and vocabulary of the target syllabus. Participants were provided with a large number of ready-made materials that they will be able to use immediately in their classrooms. In between the sessions, the British Councel representative Kristijan Rajković made a short presentation themed British Councel Examinations and the latest on-line projects. Once again The English Book showed its generosity having given small gifts to all the participants. Their representative Olja Milović informed the present teachers about the latest editions of books on ELT games and activities. The seminar lasted from 11.00 to 16.00. In the end, it was evaluated that this teacher training seminar has fully met the participants ’ expectations and all of them expressed their wish to meet again soon. |
REPORT on EAQUALS Workshop Meeting The event was attended by Vesna Stakić who represented YALS and the 'Tom & Emma School of English' Belgrade The aim of the annual workshop meeting of EAQUALS members, was to provide an opportunity for members to work together on special interest projects (SIPs) relevant to them, which are as follows:
Each participant in the meeting had to choose one SIP they would work on and I chose the I also attended the launch of the Core Inventory for English, a joint project of EAQUALS and the British Council, the aim of which is to make the CEFR accessible to teachers and adult learners of General English. It lists key language points for each CEFR level from A1 to C1 and includes language points (functions, grammar, vocabulary, topics and discourse markers) at the levels at which they are considered of most relevance to the learner. This will facilitate defining objectives, writing syllabuses and planning courses. |
